As Carl Sagan said, science is “A candle in the dark.” It lights our way, lets us see what is hiding in the shadows or under the bed, and provides us with a means of understanding both the universe and ourselves.....Each topic includes individual references and links for further exploration.From The First 4 Billion YearsIn the beginning there was no solar system. All was formless and void in the inky darkness that would one day be our home. Then by chance two hydrogen atoms came together and it was good. Their gravitational potential increased attracting others and then there were four and eight and sixteen and before you could say protoplanetary disk there was one and it was good. But it was not the first day, in fact it would be four billion years before an early ancestor of man recognized and perhaps named the time from sunrise to sunset as a day. And there had already been 3,321,500,000 of those days (3.3 billion years) before those first two lonely hydrogen atoms found one-another. And that chance meeting would be followed by 36,500,000 more days (100,000 years) before our sun would ignite its nuclear furnace and light the darkness. It would have been the third time those hydrogen atoms came together with their brothers to form a sun. And this would be the beginning of our first 4 billion years. And it was good.From Cellular Communication:Billions of years before cell phones, dropped calls and texting while driving biological cells were prodding the cell next to them and asking ‘R U there?’ Cells, particularly in confederations such as human bodies are constantly sending and receiving messages- constantly building and destroying the proteins and enzymes used like words for this communication. And like the phone system calls can be either local or long-distance. Local communication is through paracrine or synaptic signaling. In paracrine communication a cell creates and releases a protein into the interstitial fluid between cells. If this protein matches up with a receptor on an adjacent cell then that cell will ‘accept the call’ and perform an appropriate action.
